Re: ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAY 2006 MASS PROTESTS BY THE NATION OF SOUTH AZERBAIJAN AND THEIR VIOLENT REPRESSION BY IRANIAN AUTHORITIES
We build on the extensive information bringing to your kind attention the human rights demands of millions of South Azerbaijanis who participated in widespread mass protests. We also informed you of the commemoration of those events planned for this year to honour those young Southern Azerbaijani lives perished through extra-judicial ways and also to demand the release of many more who have been unfairly imprisoned since 22 May 2006 peaceful protests (Our letter: on 12 May 07; Ref: 453). As it was clarified in the said letter, the Iranian government resorted to violence and repression through an undeclared curfew and the situation continues until today.
From early May 2007, the police and security agents started arresting and torturing innocent people. Until present date, almost 1000 of our countrymen have been arrested, interrogated and tortured in order to obtain false confessions from them. Under the most savage and medieval style tortures, a number of prisoners have been killed and many others are confronting similar destiny.
In relation to the recent events, in Urmu prison, Huseyn Ferhude and Irej Naji have been under severe maltreatment and torture. Statements issued by Amnesty International have been attached for your attention (MDE 13/062/2007 on 30 May 2007).
According to the information obtained from reliable sources, members of armed forces, the police and security agents have been attacking and arresting young people in streets and the alleyways. Furthermore, entering people’s homes and workplaces with indescribable violence have become common practice. Many universities and secondary schools have been raided and students have been expelled from their academic courses.
The present situation has escalated to such a grave level that, the Ministry of Internal Affairs have demanded the names and the identities of all Southern Azerbaijani intellectuals and educationalists. With similar methods, many students have been identified, arrested and imprisoned. In relation to such events,
formal and documented letters are under preparation which will reveal Iranian government’s harsh and inhumane treatment of South Azerbaijanis which will be forwarded to you in due course.
However, the prevailing tense situation will be heightened further if the Iranian authorities are appeased and this absurd indifference is continued by the United Nations and Human Rights Organisations for such a sensitive humanitarian issue.
We would like to appeal for your immediate, decisive and urgent action to condemn the Iranian government for their persistent violation of human rights of the nation of Southern Azerbaijan. We are confident that your invaluable and most effective interference in this matter can result in the prevention of inhumane practices perpetrated by the Iranian authorities against our nation.
The Committee for the Defence of the Rights of World Azerbaijanis
