Seid Metinpur

A Southern Azerbaijani prisoner of conscience

Dear sir/madam

Further to our Update No 2 (Ref. 473/2007, Date 12 December 2007), please find enclosed Update No 3 to safeguard human rights of Mr. Seid Metinpur, a distinguished human rights defender of Southern Azerbaijan persecuted arbitrarily by Iranian authorities.

The latest development published in the very reliable source of Haqqimiz ( is:

  • The families of Mr. Metinpur-s (please note that beside Seid Metinpur, his brother Elirza Metinpur is also a prisoner of conscience), Mr. and Mrs Seferi (see our Communications Ref: 463/2007; Date: 7 September 2007) and Mr. Jelil Qenilu (Ref: 457/2007; Date: 4 July 2007) were at last allowed to visit their loved ones on 17 December 2007, after 5 months of arbitrary detention.
  • The families have stated their concern on the physical conditions and weight loss of each one of the victims as a clear sign that they have suffered torture and maltreatment.
  • Mrs. Etiyye Metinpur, visiting her husband for the first time after five months, has stated that her husband Mr. Seid Metinpur was suffering from a severe weight loss and hair loss.
  • Again according to Mrs. Etiyye Metinpur, her husband has been transferred to a general wing in prison, although the name of the prison has not been specified and therefore we assume it to be Evin prison.

It is beyond doubt that all these Southern Azerbaijani victims have been arbitrarily deprived of their liberty and suffered untold waves of torture. We are concerned with the health of each one of these victims and in particular, with the hair loss of Mr. Metinpur, which is attributable to torture or possibly the use of illicit drugs. We would like to bring the poor health of these victims to the attention of the Special Rapporteur for the Right to Health.

We would not hesitate to attribute the new developments to your efforts and hope that you will step up your campaign for the reinstatement of human rights and health rights of these victims. On this occasion, we take this opportunity to express our seasonal greeting to every member of your office and to that of Amnesty International. We hope you would be stepping up your campaign for the reinstatement of human rights of these Southern Azerbaijani victims and thank you in advance for your care.

Yours sincerely,

Boyuk Resuloglu
