Seid Metinpur

A Southern Azerbaijani prisoner of conscience

Etiyye Metinpur: “O God, please protect Seid and bear witness to how a nation is helpless and isolated and yet how another nation with impoverished national consciousness is indifferent and in a deep hibernation.

Dear sir/madam

Please find enclosed Update No 2 to our Communication (Ref: 458/2007; Date 22 July 200) to safeguard human rights of Mr. Seid Metinpur, a distinguished human rights defender of Southern Azerbaijan persecuted arbitrarily by Iranian authorities. The document provided for your attention is given in Table 1 and is the translation of Letter No 2 from his wife, Mrs. Etiyye Metinpur. This brilliant peace of writing is so powerful that we felt obliged to share her inherent insight into human rights with you. We draw your attention to her confirmations that:

  • Mr. Metinpur has been deprived of his liberty for 200 days and he is being tortured.
  • The Iranian authorities are aiming to beat confession out of Mr. Metinpur for a crime that he has never committed.
  • She exposes a deep-going hypocrisy in Iranian human rights defence and their miserable treatment of any neighbouring nation not belonging to the so called “super Aryan race.”

We are pleased to read in her letter that Mrs. Metinpur is defiant and regards human rights defenders as individuals who give a new lease of life to humanity despite outrageous acts of culprit authorities. We cannot help admiring her commendable resolve to remain determined as ever and metaphorically speaking we regard her marriage with her husband as a “perfect match made in heaven.”

Her insight into human rights defence also sets a tremendous challenge for international human right defending organisations when she implies that the nation of Southern Azerbaijan is helpless and isolated and the Iranian-centric nation with impoverished national consciousness is indifferent and in a deep hibernation. She may be appealing to God in what ever mode, nonetheless we would like to mention that we do not live in the middle ages but in the 21st century and the body of UN human right declarations are precisely meant for people like Mrs. Metinpur not to feal so desperate. By the strength of such powerful evidence once again we appeal to you stating outright that the defence of the nation of Southern Azerbaijan only rests within the mandates of the UN entrusted upon you. We trust that you are meeting the challenge and are true to the trust of the mandates within your responsibilities. Thank you for your care.

Yours sincerely,

Boyuk Resuloglu

Chairperson of the Committee for the Defence of the Rights of World Azerbaijanis

On the 200th day of Seid Metinpur’s Solitary Confinement

A letter by Mrs. Etiyye Metinpur (the wife of Mr. Seid Metinpur)

According to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, an accused cannot be detained without indictment for more than 24 hours. Not withstanding this Constitutional provision, my husband, Seid Metinpur, is in his 200th day of detention in solitary confinement and subjected to untold waves of torture to beat confession out of him for a crime that he has never committed.

One expects that the articles of the Constitution and other norms of humanity and ethics to be equally applicable to everyone including Seid but what can I expect from ostentatiously religious holders of the reign of power? They have simply violated all the articles of the Constitution and the norms of humanity and ethics in the case of Seid. Over the recent years, this is simply an unprecedented behaviour towards a prisoner of conscience and a human right defender.

I am astounded to see no one is raising a voice of protest.

It is regrettable that intellectual movements and political parties in Iran are out of kilter in relation to the movements of the nationalities proclaiming their identity, as well as those in relation to women’s rights and workers rights … If the rulers perpetuating their reign of power by interpreting libertarianism and intellectualism as irresponsible trends, they too are equally motivated to distort women’s movement as polygamy (the text is specific in saying having many husbands) or on the other hand they label workers’ movements as Marxism and equate ethnic identity movements to separatism.

The reformist culture is so immature, defective and poisonous that reformers resort to silence even when faced with the most grotesque injustice and heinous crimes; and they stoke the fire set by the violators of human rights. The General Secretary of the grand political party is indifferent to the ongoing unease, to the increasing number of prisoners of conscience, and intensifying violations of human rights. Though he monitors public opinion but his most serious statements make one to sweat from shame (due to apathy to truth), stating that: “whatever the position of Ahmedi Nejad, the popularity of the reformers is growing.” I am cross with myself thinking about my times when I believed them and so cheaply expressed my confidence on them!!

This is the same as “asking a stranger to mend the clothes but then you get back a mended clothe with hundreds of more holes to be mended.”

The majority of human rights defenders in Iran have vested interest in the defence of their subjects. Although in real terms a large body of human rights is devoted to defending the rights of individuals promoting their national identity, the majority of the libertarians in Iran and all of the reformists are oblivious to these and are confronted with a big dilemma in this connection.

It is necessary to fully understand the body of the movement for promoting national/ethnic identities and embrace human right defence as a whole and without duplicity and without hypocrisy.  But how rare and dear are such individuals and yet we have plenty of prisoners of conscience to name but a few: Maryam Hosein-khah, Jelveh Javahir, Mensur Usanlu, Mededi, Leyla Heyderi (her marriage name is Seferi), Ebdullah Abbasi, Behruz Seferi, Jelil Qenilu, Elirza Metinpur, Abbas Lisani, … Their fault is to be engaged in thinking about the root causes and for this, they are kept in solitary confinement and are subjected to physical and psychological torture; they are forced to be filmed while they confess for a crime that they have never committed. These are the individuals who put on with the most shameful injustice inflicted on them in the prison and people like Ebdullah Mo’mini who defend human rights as a whole are able to give a new lease of life to humanity.

Greetings to these individuals.

O God, now it is 200 days that my husband, Seid, in solitary confinements and being tortured; he is sleepless; he is humiliated; he is deprived of the sunlight. They demand him to accept a crime that he has never committed; to pose to the TV camera … It is 200 days that I have no news on his whereabouts; I do not know what is being inflicted on him; or what they want from him.

O God, please protect him and bear witness to how a nation is helpless and isolated and yet how another nation with impoverished national consciousness is indifferent and in a deep hibernation.

As of me, I am as determined and fortified as I can be and whispering:

“Here is a modern Prometheus and enchained; enchained for discovering the secret of ‘immortality’; but there will come a time for undoing the chains, after which the wounds shall be healed.”
