Dear Mrs. Harrison,

Re           ESCALATING SUPRESSION OF SOUTHERN AZERBAIJANI CAMPAIGN TO SAVE OUR MOTHER TONGUE

Further to our letter Ref.: 381/2006 on 16 September 2006, we are writing to you much concerned with the escalation of arbitrary detentions of Southern Azerbaijanis by the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Several news clips from Azerbaijani media are provided for your information but without translation, although their salient information is presented in the table below. It is not coincident that more sentences on our activists are being issued at the wake of this planned campaign. Additionally Mr. Babek Bekhtaver confirmed in GünAzTV last night that his father, Mr. Chengiz Bekhtaver and also Mr. Qulamrza Emani have been rearrested in Tebriz. He also provided the name of two activists in Maragha, who were arrested yesterday but we are not quoting their names until confirmed fully.

No more toleration of TV satellite aerial especially in the Hemedan region of Southern Azerbaijan

The onslaught of the Iranian authorities on the peaceful Babek Assembly of Southern Azerbaijan in 29-30 June 2006 has strengthened activists’ resolve, even though the current wave of arrests bears the hallmark of those at the wake of the Babek Assembly. As visible from the above table, the Iranians authorities are preparing for another crackdown, as typical of monolithic policies in any fascist country. Southern Azerbaijanis seek their defence by the virtue of the universal declaration of human rights, and we remain hopeful that you are monitoring the events to safeguard human rights of Azerbaijani Turks at these critical moments. We thank you in advance.

Yours sincerely,

Boyuk Resuloglu

The Committee for the Defence of the Rights of World Azerbaijanis
